Usage and billing

On this page

Toolstile counts requests forwarded to connected MCP servers, including discovery and requests that fail upstream. Each workspace has its own operation allowance, shared by its agents and members. When it runs out, forwarding stops without paid overages. Gateway retries of the same request count once; automatic background maintenance does not count.

Free and paid subscriptions are available. Eligible users and workspaces can start a seven-day paid-plan trial with a payment method and explicit consent to monthly billing.

What counts as an operation?

An operation is a request Toolstile accepts for forwarding to an MCP server because of an agent or user action. It still counts if the server returns an error or cannot complete it.

ActivityHow it counts
Call a tool, read a resource or request a promptEach forwarded request uses one operation.
Discover tools, resources, resource templates or promptsEach forwarded list request counts, including each extra page.
Ask the gateway for capabilities across several serversEach request to each server counts separately.
Look up a server's catalog to route an agent requestThe forwarded lookup counts as well as the resulting request.
Run a connection check, setup verification or test that contacts an MCP serverEach forwarded catalog or test request counts.
Receive an upstream errorThe operation still counts.
Have Toolstile retry the same request during transportThe gateway counts that request once.
Submit the request again from your clientIt is a new request and counts separately.
Have a request rejected before Toolstile accepts it for forwardingIt does not consume a new operation.
Gateway handshakes, notifications and automatic background maintenanceThese do not use your operation allowance.

A single agent action can use several operations. Listing tools from two servers with two pages each uses four operations. A later tool call uses another; extra routing lookups add to the total.

Checking a live MCP connection from the dashboard can also send several requests; viewing saved data does not.

Free resets at 00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month. Paid allowances follow the subscription billing period. Unused operations expire; they do not roll over. Trial operations are separate from normal monthly allowances.

An account can use one Free personal workspace and one Free team workspace, each with its own allowance. Free applies to that account's first team workspace; paying for it or deleting it does not make another team Free. Additional teams need a paid plan before forwarding can run.

What happens at the limit?

Forwarding stops at the allowance, without an overage charge. On Free, wait for the next calendar-month reset. An owner can also review a plan with a larger allowance.

Toolstile creates in-app usage notices at 80% and 100% of the allowance. Owners can check the workspace's used operations, allowance and period end on the Usage & billing page. Toolstile does not send these notices by email yet, so check that page and Notifications directly.

Short-term request limits, permissions and the connected service's limits still apply. If requests arrive too quickly, wait briefly before retrying. Subscription or payment problems can also pause forwarding with operations remaining.

Your allowance covers gateway use. Connected services and AI clients may charge separately; their permissions and quotas still apply.

Only workspace owners can view billing details and manage subscriptions. Select the right workspace before opening Usage & billing; personal and team usage are separate.

Paid subscriptions are billed monthly in advance in US dollars. Review the amount due before confirming a subscription or change. Hosted payment pages are handled by Autumn and Stripe.

Seven-day trials

An eligible trial lasts seven days and requires a payment method plus explicit consent to automatic monthly billing unless cancelled before the deadline. It includes the chosen plan's features with one 10,000-operation allowance for the whole trial. It does not include that plan's normal monthly allowance on top.

Each person and workspace can have at most one trial, including after an ownership transfer.

The trial ends on schedule even if you use all 10,000 operations sooner. Exhaustion stops forwarding and never charges you early. You may explicitly choose to end the trial and start paying. Confirmed payment starts a separate paid allowance period; trial usage remains in your history.

Cancel before the trial deadline to avoid the charge. You keep the remaining time and operations until the original deadline. For paid trials, Toolstile provides a reminder to workspace owners about 48 hours before charging. You are still responsible for cancelling in time.

Upgrades and downgrades

An upgrade takes effect after the prorated price difference for the rest of the period is paid. Your renewal date stays the same; used operations count against the higher allowance without resetting the counter.

A downgrade takes effect at the start of the next billing period. If it removes support for permission policies or custom roles you use, the agent access depending on those settings pauses until a workspace admin explicitly converts it. Toolstile does not silently discard the restrictions. See permissions.

Moving between plans does not restore operations already used in the same period.

Cancellation

On the workspace's Usage & billing page, choose Review cancellation, check the effective date and confirm Schedule cancellation. Refresh status to confirm. The paid plan continues until the current paid period ends.

Afterwards, eligible workspaces move to Free; others pause forwarding until a paid plan restarts. Moving to Free retains usage and does not guarantee a fresh 5,000 operations immediately.

Deleting an account or workspace is a separate action. Before deleting a paid workspace, cancel its subscription or trial and confirm on Usage & billing that it will not renew. Resolve pending billing changes first. Deletion does not itself cancel a subscription.

Failed payments and billing interruptions

If the first subscription payment fails, paid access does not start. The workspace uses Free if eligible; otherwise forwarding pauses. There is no payment grace period for that first charge.

If a later renewal fails, you have seven days from the start of that renewal period to fix payment. The normal operation allowance still applies during grace. If payment remains unresolved, forwarding stops until it is resolved. Waiting or refreshing status does not extend the deadline.

Billing-provider interruptions can also pause paid forwarding even with operations remaining. Owners can still reach billing and the settings needed to restore access. If a payment or change is awaiting confirmation, refresh or synchronize its status before attempting another payment. Contact support@toolstile.com if it stays unresolved.

First-subscription refunds

A workspace's first subscription payment can be refunded in full within seven days after Toolstile first confirms that initial payment. Usage & billing shows the deadline. This window does not start at signup or invoice creation.

The owner can choose Review first-subscription refund on Usage & billing and confirm Request full refund, or email support@toolstile.com. The refund covers the initial subscription payment, even if the workspace has since upgraded. It does not refund a later upgrade or renewal under this rule.

Paid access ends when the refund is processed. Used operations and billing history remain recorded. This refund is available once per workspace, with no new window for later subscriptions or renewals. Other refunds are provided where required by law or at Toolstile's discretion. See the Terms.

Check your next step

For a new workspace, start with Free and follow getting started. If requests have stopped, compare the allowance and billing status with your agent's access in troubleshooting.
