What your AI apps can do with Jina AI
- Read URLs and capture screenshots
- Search the web, arXiv and images
Jina AI MCP tools
12 tools, listed by Toolstile from the server itself on 29 October 2026. The server decides what it offers and can add or rename tools at any time; after you connect, Toolstile shows the current list.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
primer | Current time, user location and network environment for the session. Use before answering anything time- or location-dependent. |
guess_datetime_url | Guess when a page was published or last updated, with a confidence score. Checks HTTP headers, metadata, Schema.org, visible dates, feeds and sitemaps. |
capture_screenshot_url | Screenshot a page as base64 JPEG. Use when the page must be seen rather than read. |
read_url | Fetch a URL (page or PDF) as clean markdown. Pass `question` to get only the passages answering it instead of the whole page - far cheaper than reading the full body into context. |
search_web | Search the web. Returns titles, URLs and search-engine snippets. |
search_arxiv | Search arXiv preprints (physics, maths, CS, quantitative biology and finance). |
search_ssrn | Search SSRN working papers (social science, economics, law, finance, management). |
search_jina_blog | Search Jina AI's news and blog at jina.ai/news: product announcements, model releases, technical write-ups. |
search_images | Search the web for images. Returns base64 JPEGs by default. |
sort_by_relevance | Rerank documents by relevance to a query, using Jina Reranker. |
deduplicate_strings | Select the top-k semantically distinct strings from a list, dropping near-duplicates. |
extract_pdf | Extract figures, tables and equations from a PDF as images, by arXiv id or URL. |
Suggested access for each AI app
Jina AI's server doesn't mark its tools as read-only or destructive. Read each tool's description and decide per app before allowing it.
Coding agent in Claude Code or Cursor. Allow the read tools so the agent can look things up without stopping, and require approval for tools that change shared data.
Chat or research app in Claude Desktop. Allow reading and searching. Allow writes only where you want the app to act for you.
Unattended agent, such as a scheduled Codex job. No one is watching the session, so keep it narrow: allow what the job needs, require approval for changes and block the rest.
Blocked tools are removed from the tool list an app sees, so it won't try them. Because rules apply per app, the same Jina AI connection can be broad in one app and read-only in another, and the credential stays in Toolstile instead of each app's config file.
How it works with Toolstile
- Connect once. Add Jina AI to a workspace (no sign-in or access token). Toolstile keeps the credential, so no agent config holds it.
- Choose access per app. Give Claude Code every Jina AI tool, give Cursor only the read tools, or keep Jina AI away from an app entirely.
- Share approved accounts. Teammates use the connection without copying tokens, and you can remove access in one place.
- Review activity. See which app called which tool and when, so you can tighten access with evidence.
Add the Jina AI MCP server to an AI app
Through Toolstile, every AI app uses one gateway entry, whichever servers you connect. In Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http toolstile 'https://toolstile.com/mcp'Then connect Jina AI in your workspace and choose which of its tools that app may use. Client setup covers Codex, Cursor and Claude Desktop.
To connect directly instead, add the Jina AI endpoint to each app separately. In Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http jina 'https://mcp.jina.ai/v1'In Cursor's mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"jina": {
"url": "https://mcp.jina.ai/v1"
}
}
}Some servers accept only clients they have approved, or need a token header. Check the Jina AI MCP documentation for what your client needs.
Before you connect
No account needed for basic use. A Jina API key raises rate limits.
Choose no sign-in, or enter a Jina API key as the access token for higher limits.
